Rooted Relationships

Recall that the early section of the book was very meaty. It was full of doctrine about the supremacy and deity of Christ. Paul then turns very practical and says, “When you put Christ in His rightful place in your life, and you're in rhythm with Him, it will impact the relationships around you. With that in mind, Paul addresses wives, husbands, children, and parents. 

Paul’s statements in this section would have been totally counter-cultural. It was probably unlike anything they had ever heard before, and yet it brought a whole new level of dignity and respect to both women and men. Remember that marriage is from God; it's His design. It's one man and one woman coming together, and the roles He has given us are intended to symbolize and represent a greater reality in the relationship of Jesus Christ to His church. 

Christ serves as the perfect example. There is a hierarchy in the Trinity and yet equality. Jesus is equal in nature to the Father. He shares in the same divinity, power, glory, and authority. Yet, He willingly submitted to the Father’s will to accomplish God’s plan of redemption. He humbled Himself in obedience. Out of respect for Christ, each member of the family is to place themselves under the designated authority in order to be well-pleasing

to the Lord.
