In 1818, a 47-year-old widow, named Elvina Hall, was sitting in the choir loft one Sunday listening to her pastor's message. We don't know exactly what was preached that day, but it could very well have been on Colossians. After the message, she took out some paper and wrote a little poem that became the hymn we know of as, Jesus Paid It All. The first verse is very familiar, "I hear the savior say, thy strength indeed is small; child of weakness watch and pray, find in Me thine all in all. Jesus paid it all, all to Him I owe; sin had left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow. There's a fourth verse that's not often sung but is especially relevant to our study: "And now complete in Him, my robe, my righteousness, close sheltered neath His side, I am divinely blest."
The saving gospel message centers on the Person and work of Jesus Christ. If you are in Christ, that is, you have personally reached out to Christ in saving faith, you are completely forgiven and totally free. You cannot add to or detract from His finished work. It is to be accepted by faith and then lived out in obedience.
There are people all around us who are trapped in a system of works and conditions that have been placed on their salvation. Help them to see what the Word of God actually says; Jesus paid it all!
