Does Forgiveness Have Limits

The subject of forgiveness immediately stirs emotion. We all have people who have offended us, and in many cases, the wounds still linger. In Matthew 18, Jesus engages His disciples in a discussion about forgiveness. Peter, feeling rather generous, asks, “Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? Up to seven times?” Jesus’ answer changed everything: “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.” His point was clear — there are to be no limits on forgiveness.

From a human standpoint, this seems impossible. When we’re offended, our natural reaction is to raise our defenses and prepare for battle. We justify our feelings and convince ourselves that we’re right and others are wrong. There are endless excuses for holding grudges and seeking payback. Yet Christ instructs us, “Never pay back evil for evil to anyone,” and instead, “Respect what is right.” In other words, seek reconciliation quickly and intentionally.

This applies to everyday life — disagreements between neighbors, family members, co-workers, and fellow believers. It’s the stuff of real relationships. The key to biblical forgiveness is a transformed mind that depends on the Spirit of God to respond in a way that glorifies Him.

This week’s big question is: Who do you need to forgive?

Spend some time reflecting on Matthew 18 and Romans 12. Ask God to give you a heart of compassion that goes beyond your natural instincts, and allow Him to work the ministry of reconciliation in your life today.
