A Life That Matters: Know It, Live It, Pass It On

One of the quiet questions shaping our lives is this: What will I be remembered for? Obituaries have a way of revealing priorities in just a few short paragraphs—what someone worked at, what they enjoyed, and what they valued most. Sometimes those summaries are inspiring. Other times, they’re sobering—because the life described was centered mainly on comfort or entertainment.

In Ezra chapter 7, God gives us a very different kind of summary. Ezra 7:10 tells us what defined Ezra’s life: “Ezra had set his heart to study the law of the LORD, to practice it, and to teach His statutes and ordinances in Israel.” That verse is more than biography—it’s a blueprint for a life that truly matters.

First, Ezra set his heart to know God’s Word. He didn’t casually glance at Scripture or treat it as optional. Born in Babylon with no temple and no external pressure to pursue spiritual depth, Ezra still made God’s Word his highest priority. Knowing Scripture requires intentional focus, not passive exposure.

Second, Ezra lived out what he learned. Knowledge alone does not produce maturity. Ezra practiced the Word. His obedience shaped his character, his decisions, and his credibility. God’s Word transformed how he lived, not just what he believed.

Finally, Ezra passed the truth on to others. He didn’t hoard what God taught him. Through teaching, example, and leadership, Ezra helped bring spiritual reform to an entire nation. Teaching doesn’t require a pulpit—it happens through parenting, conversation, encouragement, and everyday faithfulness.

Ezra reminds us that life is more than killing time until we die. It’s about investing our lives in what will last. So, here’s a question worth asking this week: If Ezra 7:10 were the summary of your life, which part would be weakest—knowing it, living it, or passing it on? And what one step could you take this week to strengthen it?

Press on!
